Literature Text

Baptizing all in a river of doctrine,
And calling them to be faithful to the One,

The prose he espouses is easy on the tongue
So much so that empty ignorance seems profound.

But he is more than a One; more, yes.
He is an all, a black dove that morphs into stormy flocks.

Pouring into both proverbial and provincial waters
The lead of deceit and the mercury of spite.

And I ask you, my unexpecting ears, I ask sincerely:
Why is it suspect to be a refugee, an immigrant, an Other?

Why are humans divided by imaginary fears? And why?
Why are the poor such firm believers despite being so numerous?

And why are the numerous poor so weak? It is so
Because the propagandist, a soldier of our misfortunes,

Divides all, and bivouacs us into battlefields. So,
Like Joan of Arc’s heavenly sword, a purified weapon,

We are manufactured from the steel of spiritual industry,
And reborn in the waters of impossible Babylons,

Baptized in a river of even-handed ignominy,
And called to be renewed by our faith to the One.

I sometimes find that my poems differ in intention from their interpretation by readers. Readers always have an important part in creating a poem's meaning though.

The meaning of a poem is the sum of all its readings. If no one reads a given poem, it remains merely a thing of potential meaning, an organized array of symbols whose individual meanings drift over time.

My intention with this particular poem is to criticize the "cult of personality" around political figures. I use religion as an allegory. The great politicians always attempt to liken themselves to religious figures, saviors of our souls whom we must praise and show devotion to. Political speech is "empty ignorance" which "seems profound."

Despite the religious allegory, I can see what motivated the poem here. As always, your topical poetry is timeless.
